SYNOPSIS:
Nick Dear’s play FRANKENSTEIN is a stage adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. The story revolves around Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who creates a monstrous being from dead body parts. However, this adaptation is unique in that it’s primarily told from the creature’s perspective, offering a fresh and sympathetic view of the often-misunderstood being.
The play was first performed at the National Theatre in London, in a production directed by Danny Boyle. The production starred Benedict Cumberbatch as the Creature and Jonny Lee Miller as Victor Frankenstein, with the two actors alternating roles in each performance.
Through the creature’s narrative, the play explores themes of responsibility, morality, and the nature of monstrosity, raising questions about what it means to be human and the consequences of unchecked ambition. By focusing on the creature’s journey, Dear’s adaptation humanizes the monster, eliciting both empathy and horror from the audience.
